Why the world sometimes gets you wrong

by on May.13, 2011, under Disability, Musings

I was catching up on my Twitter friends’ feed this evening while waiting for a render to complete, and noticed a mini-rant from Yasmine Galenorn, the author of the Sisters of The Moon novels.  With her kind permission, I’m reposting it here to give some context on my own thoughts:

Tron: A sad legacy

by on Dec.20, 2010, under General

Let me start off by explaining a few things.

I was a kid when Tron, the original movie, was released – and it blew my young mind.  In some ways, the movie helped me to get into computing because it showed from a technical standpoint how computers could be used to create.  Ever since then, the look and feel of the movie has been an influence on both my cyberpunk/future related artwork, as well as my visualization of the neural Interfaces of the Legion Universe novels and stories.

Avatar – Did James Cameron Raise The Bar Yet Again?

by on Dec.23, 2009, under Musings

For science fiction movies, some names being involved stand out, and combined you just know you’re looking at a roller-coaster ride.

What do you think could result from a movie directed by James Cameron, co-starring Sigourney Weaver, scored by James Horner, sound laid down by Skywalker Sound, aliens and creatures designed by Stan Winston Studios, and choc-full of computer generated graphics courtesy of WETA of Lord of The Rings fame, Framestore, and ILM??

No need to imagine – just go watch ‘Avatar‘.

Render – Avatar Commission

by on Oct.17, 2008, under 3D Artwork

I’m so used to rendering in “large” scale, the idea of coming up with an avatar for a friend that would fit in Yahoo Instant Messenger’s display image restrictions of 96×96 was certainly different.

Figuring out a pose that would work at such a small scale was tricky, but one of adamthwaites’ freebie PoseKit poses seemed to fit the purpose.

I put it over a curved backdrop to give it a studio feel, and used a three light set-up, one being a spot from below the camera position to bring the eyes out – test renders without it left the eyes as black spaces in the final render.
